We Shared a Horizon, 2012-2014, two-channel HD video installation, color, sound, 1 hr 2 min 12 sec, ed. of 3

In We Shared a Horizon, a two channel video by Miguel Arzabe from 2012-2014, a circular orange kite and a large orange ball traverse diverse landscapes -mountains, deserts, forests, lakes, rivers, and within infrastructure projects such as bridges, roads, and drainage canals- ostensibly searching for one another. Each object possesses its own disposition: the kite flighty and mercurial, the ball plodding and comical. It would seem that they would complete one another, yet they never come together. In reality, each object’s movements are a result of Arzabe’s off-screen actions, which draw attention to the persistent forces in the background. Reminiscent of a love poem to an unrequited lover, an anxious tension builds from his simple and playful gestures. The efforts to control natural forces are futile, exposing the fragility of human intervention in the face of current global climatic shifts.
